Westfield, NJ (August 5, 2025) – On Monday morning, August 4, a bicyclist was killed in a crash in Westfield after a suspected drunk driver veered into oncoming traffic and caused a violent chain reaction.
The collision occurred just before 10 a.m. on the 100 block of W. North Avenue. According to Westfield police, 20-year-old Anthony Ramirez Velazquez, of Perth Amboy, was driving eastbound when he crossed into the westbound lane and hit a van. The impact caused the van to flip onto its side and strike a 71-year-old Kenilworth man riding a bicycle along the westbound shoulder.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released as of Tuesday morning. Luckily, the van’s occupants were not injured.
Ramirez Velazquez was initially arrested at the scene for driving while intoxicated. He now faces additional charges, including death by auto and two counts of assault by auto. He is being held at the Essex County jail. Attorney information was not immediately available.
The investigation is ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim. We also wish those hurt a rapid recovery.
Common Injuries from Bicycle Accidents in New Jersey
When a bicyclist is struck by a vehicle, the injuries can be severe or fatal, especially on busy roadways like W. North Avenue. Even with a helmet and proper safety gear, cyclists have little physical protection compared to drivers. Some of the most common injuries reported in New Jersey bicycle accidents include:
- Head trauma, including concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
- Spinal cord injuries, which may lead to long-term disability or paralysis
- Broken bones, especially in the arms, legs, ribs, or collarbone
- Facial injuries, such as fractures, dental trauma, or lacerations
- Internal bleeding and damage to organs from blunt force impact
- Road rash and severe skin abrasions, which may require skin grafts
- Psychological trauma, including anxiety, PTSD, and depression, after the crash
Crashes involving bicyclists are often severe, as riders have little protection from the impact of a vehicle. These types of accidents can result in serious injuries or the tragic loss of life, especially when negligence or impaired driving is involved.
