Common Injuries in Motorcycle Crashes in New Jersey

Motorcycle accidents in New Jersey can result in a wide range of injuries, even in cases where the rider is wearing protective gear. Because motorcycles offer limited protection, riders are especially vulnerable in collisions with larger vehicles. Here are some of the most common injuries seen in these accidents:

  • Road rash: When a rider is thrown from the bike and slides across the pavement, the skin can be scraped or deeply abraded. This injury can range from mild to severe and may require skin grafts in serious cases.
  • Broken bones: Arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones are frequently fractured in motorcycle crashes, especially when the rider tries to break their fall or is pinned under the motorcycle.
  • Head injuries: Even with a helmet, riders can suffer concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). These injuries may not always show immediate symptoms, so medical evaluation is critical after a crash.
  • Spinal injuries: Damage to the back or neck can lead to long-term complications, including herniated discs, nerve damage, or even paralysis in the most serious accidents.
  • Internal injuries: Blunt force trauma can cause internal bleeding or damage to organs, which may not be immediately visible but can become life-threatening without prompt treatment.
  • Soft tissue damage: Ligaments, tendons, and muscles may be strained or torn in the impact, leading to ongoing pain and mobility issues.

Motorcycle crashes often lead to serious and lasting injuries. Unlike drivers in enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists are exposed to greater risks on the road; even a low-speed collision can cause broken bones, head trauma, or permanent disability. Medical treatment, time away from work, and the emotional toll of recovery can leave you and your family overwhelmed. Each motorcycle crash is unique, but understanding these injury risks can help victims take appropriate steps toward recovery and legal protection.
