Common Causes of Traffic Accidents in New Jersey
Collisions like the one in
Deptford Township highlight the daily risks faced by drivers and passengers across New Jersey. Some of the most frequent contributing factors to roadway crashes include:
- Distracted driving: Distractions are one of the leading causes of crashes in New Jersey and across the U.S. Mobile devices, such as texting or checking social media while behind the wheel, are particularly dangerous because they take a driver’s eyes, hands, and attention off the road. Even seemingly minor actions, such as adjusting the radio, programming a GPS, eating, or talking with passengers, can delay reaction times and increase the chance of a collision.
- Failure to yield: Intersections are high-risk areas where drivers must follow traffic signals, stop signs, and right-of-way rules. Many serious accidents occur when drivers fail to yield to oncoming traffic, pedestrians in crosswalks, or vehicles making turns. These violations often lead to side-impact crashes, which can cause severe injuries due to limited protection on the sides of cars.
- Speeding: Exceeding posted speed limits or driving too fast for conditions dramatically raises the risk of an accident. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to recognize hazards and safely react. The force of impact also increases, making injuries and property damage much more severe. Speeding is especially dangerous in residential areas, school zones, and intersections where unexpected stops are common.
- Impaired driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or certain medications impairs judgment, slows reaction times, and reduces coordination. Despite strict laws, impaired driving remains a major contributor to serious and fatal crashes in New Jersey. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect decision-making and increase the likelihood of risky maneuvers behind the wheel.
- Hazardous conditions: Weather and road conditions play a major role in traffic safety. Heavy rain can lead to hydroplaning, fog can drastically reduce visibility, and snow or ice can cause vehicles to slide or lose control. Poorly lit roads, potholes, and construction zones also create dangers for drivers. When conditions are less than ideal, motorists are expected to reduce speed and exercise extra caution to avoid accidents.
Remaining alert and cautious, particularly at busy intersections, is essential for reducing the risk of accidents. Traffic collisions often result in medical bills, missed work, and ongoing recovery challenges.
