Elizabeth, NJ (August 27, 2025) – On Tuesday afternoon, August 26, a workout session turned tragic when a car slammed into a Planet Fitness in Elizabeth, killing a gym member and injuring two others.
City spokeswoman Ruby Contreras confirmed that the crash happened at about 12:20 p.m. on Newark Avenue. A 69-year-old woman was behind the wheel when her vehicle struck the front of the building, breaking through the glass.
A 72-year-old man, who was near the front window at the time, was fatally struck. Another gym member, a 59-year-old man using a treadmill, sustained cuts and abrasions. The driver also suffered injuries when her airbag deployed.
The Elizabeth Police Department is leading the investigation, and Contreras noted that all parties are cooperating with authorities. Following the crash, the city’s construction official ordered the gym closed until further notice.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family victim and hope those injured make a full recovery.
Risks of Vehicles Colliding With Buildings
In New Jersey, vehicle-into-building
accidents are a serious and often underestimated risk. These crashes happen when a car or truck unexpectedly drives into a structure such as a gym, restaurant, storefront, or even a private home. While less common than roadway collisions, they can be especially dangerous because victims inside usually have no warning or chance to protect themselves.
The causes of these accidents vary. In some cases, an elderly or inexperienced driver may lose control of the vehicle. Other times, medical emergencies, distracted driving, mechanical failures, or intoxication are to blame. Regardless of the reason, the impact can lead to catastrophic injuries or even fatalities. Victims often suffer broken bones, head trauma, or internal injuries, while drivers themselves may also be harmed in the crash.
Beyond the physical damage, these incidents frequently leave behind long-term financial and emotional consequences. Survivors may face extensive medical treatment, lost income from time away from work, and psychological trauma from the sudden and violent nature of the accident. Families who lose a loved one often struggle with both grief and the burden of unexpected expenses.
In New Jersey, police and city officials typically investigate these accidents to determine the cause and ensure that buildings remain structurally safe. However, liability can be complex, involving not only the driver but also potential vehicle defects or building code issues. Because of this, many victims turn to a knowledgeable New Jersey wrongful accident lawyer for guidance in recovering compensation and protecting their rights.
