Risks for Pedestrians at Intersections in New Jersey

Intersections in New Jersey present significant risks for pedestrians due to the constant interaction between vehicles, bicyclists, and foot traffic. Busy roads, multiple turning lanes, and distracted driving all increase the likelihood of collisions. Even when pedestrians follow crosswalk signals, drivers may fail to yield during left or right turns, creating dangerous situations.

One of the most common causes of intersection accidents is driver inattention. Cell phone use, speeding, or failing to observe traffic lights can prevent motorists from noticing pedestrians in time. In addition, poor visibility, such as at night, during heavy rain, or near obstructed corners, further heightens the risk. Children and elderly pedestrians are especially vulnerable, as they may take longer to cross or misjudge a vehicle’s speed.

New Jersey law requires drivers to stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in marked crosswalks, yet violations of this rule are frequent. According to traffic safety data, a significant percentage of pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections where compliance with signals and right-of-way rules is critical.

For pedestrians, staying alert and making eye contact with drivers before crossing can reduce the risk of being struck. Wearing visible clothing and avoiding distractions, such as mobile phones, also improves safety. At the same time, officials emphasize the importance of infrastructure improvements, such as better lighting, clearer crosswalk markings, and traffic-calming measures, to enhance pedestrian protection.

Ultimately, pedestrian safety at intersections in New Jersey depends on both responsible driving and proactive caution from those on foot.
