Jersey Shore, NJ – Teen on E-Bike Hit & Killed near Maryland Ave

Jersey Shore, NJ (July 18, 2025) – On Thursday, July 17, a 14-year-old boy from Egg Harbor Township was riding an e-bike when he was suddenly hit by a vehicle. The incident took place in Somers Point, according to a statement issued by law enforcement officials.

Officers and emergency services were promptly dispatched to the area of Maryland Avenue and the bike path around 8 p.m. on July 17 for a crash involving a vehicle and an e-bike rider.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the wreck was a 47-year-old woman from Philadelphia. She was reportedly unharmed, and the three young passengers traveling with her were also uninjured.

We would like to offer and extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this grieving time.

Deadly New Jersey E-Bike Accidents

Paterson, NJ - Two Teens Dead in Motorcycle Crash at Madison & Eighth Ave

In New Jersey, even though overall deaths from traffic accidents dropped from 646 in 2022 to 585 in 2023, the number of cyclists killed actually rose—from 16 in 2022 to 24 in 2023. These incidents highlight a worrying trend: more bicyclist deaths overall, and news coverage pointing specifically to e‑bike crashes as a growing concern in New Jersey.

Across the United States, e‑bike injuries and fatalities are increasing significantly. Experts estimate that from 2018 to 2022, e‑bike injuries reported in hospitals rose by around 40 %, and emergency room visits jumped from about 18,000 in 2022 to over 50 % more during some years of the pandemic period. Many of them estimate that e‑bikes now account for about 10 % of all bicycle‑related deaths in recent years. Crashes often involve motor vehicles, and head injuries are common.

These crashes tend to be more dangerous than regular bike accidents. E‑bikes can weigh more and move faster, making high‑speed collisions more likely. Most crashes happen in cities, especially at intersections or on busy streets, with loss of control or speeding involved.
