What to Do After a Highway Accident
Highway accidents can be chaotic and frightening. Knowing what to do in those first few moments can help protect your safety and your legal rights.
If you’re involved in a crash, try to stay calm. If your vehicle can still move, carefully steer it to the shoulder or as far out of traffic as possible. Turn on your hazard lights right away to warn other drivers.
Unless your car is in immediate danger (such as from a fire or fuel leak), it is usually safest to stay inside with your seatbelt on. Exiting the vehicle near fast-moving traffic is extremely risky. If you must leave the car, do so carefully and move far away from traffic lanes, ideally behind a guardrail or barrier.
Call 911 as soon as possible. Report your location, including nearby mile markers or exit numbers, and describe any injuries. If you can, check on others involved, but avoid putting yourself at further risk.
While waiting for emergency responders, do not discuss fault or sign any statements. Take photos of the scene if it’s safe to do so, including vehicle positions, damage, and surroundings. These details may be important later.
Losing a loved one is certainly life-changing. You don’t have to face this alone; a legal professional can help protect your rights. That is when a wrongful accident lawyer can help by guiding your family through the legal process, handling insurance matters, and seeking fair compensation.
